Installation of VirusScan (Student Version) on a Windows 98 / ME Computer

 

Important Note:  You must uninstall any existing anti-virus software that is currently installed on your computer (i.e. Norton A/V, older versions of McAfee A/V, etc.) before installing VirusScan.  Refer to the product documentation for removal instructions.

 

  1. Click on the following link to download the McAfee Virus Scan software:  http://winus.spfldcol.edu/virusscan/av-451.zip
  2. When prompted to “Open” or “Save” the file, click on “Save” and save the file to the c:\temp folder on your computer.(Note: You may need to create the folder.)
  3. When the download is complete, browse to the c:\temp folder on your computer and double click the “av-451.zip” file.
  4. Unzip the file to the c:\temp folder on your computer. (Note: If you do not have WinZip on your computer, download and install WinZip by clicking on the following link:  http://www.winzip.com
  5. From the Windows Start menu, click on Run.
  6. Type “c:\temp\setup.exe” in the open field and click OK.
  7. Click Next to continue with the installation.
  8. Click on “I agree to the terms of the License Agreement” as shown in Figure 2 and click Next.

  1. Click Next to choose the Typical Installation.
  2. Click Install.
  3. Click Next to continue with the installation.
  4. Click Next to Run AutoUpdate Now.  (Note:  You must have a working Internet connection for AutoUpdate to work properly.)
  5. When AutoUpdate completes, click OK.
  6. Click Finish to complete the setup.
  7. A complete scan of the system will start after the software setup is complete.  Any files that are found to contain a virus should be cleaned or deleted by the VirusScan program.
  8. An important part of the anti-virus program is scheduling the updates to the virus checking files.  To schedule updates to run automatically, click on the Windows Start menu and choose Programs - Network Associates – VirusScan Console.
  9. Double-click on the AutoUpdate line as shown in Figure 3.

  1. Click on the Schedule tab.
  2. Click on the Enable box and set the options as shown in Figure 4.  Then click Apply and OK.

The installation is now complete.
